About SAN and SAMS

The task of the Maritime Work Environment Committee (SAN) is to increase health and safety in the work environment on board.

Trade unions and employers work together within SAN to promote cooperation and increase the awareness of risks and protection in daily work by arranging conferences, financial support for work environment projects, the spreading of information and so on. In addition to the labour market partners, there are also co-opted members from the Swedish Transport Agency and Linnaeus University on the SAN board to broaden and deepen knowledge among the board members.

SAN was formed in 1956 under the name of the Maritime Board for the Protection of Workers. In its early years, the board’s work was mostly concerned with spreading occupational safety messages and other information, but new commissions came about over time. Courses were introduced in the 1970s, and a large number of safety officers were trained under SAN’s direction. At about this time, a number of new activities were also started, such as the Pajaladojan project in which safety shoes were developed in collaboration with a shoe factory, first aid for accidents was developed with the Red Cross, posters were printed to warn against smoking, to name but a few. A little later, SAN started to arrange health and safety training for naval officers, which continued until spring 2006. SAN’s operations are financed through the Maritime Work Environment Foundation (SAMS).

SAN-News

SAN publishes the magazine SAN-News four times a year,  which takes up topical issues in health and safety and describes new research and interesting work environment projects. The paper version is distributed on ships through shipping companies, while the digital version, available in Swedish and English, can be read here on the website.

About SAMS

SAN’s operations are financed through the Swedish Maritime Work Environment Foundation (SAMS). The foundation decides which projects and commissions will be supported by SAN. SAMS was formed in 1988 following an agreement between the Swedish Shipowners’ Association and the three maritime trade unions.

The board of SAMS consists of representatives from the Swedish Shipowners’ Employer Association (SARF), SEKO Seafarers and the Maritime Officers’ Association (SBF).

Maritime work environment handbook

The work environment handbook compiles information about different occupational risks, information on how to carry out health and safety work on board and the legal and statutory requirements that govern the work environment on board. The handbook also contains a detailed description of the systematic work environment management (SAM) and checklists that can be used in daily health and safety work.

The SAN health and safety course

The SAN health and safety course is aimed at everyone involved with the work environment in shipping. The course covers many aspects of health and safety at sea and gives facts and information followed by questions. The course is free of charge for everyone who is interested.

The SAN prize

Once a year, SAN awards a prize for especially commendable work related to health and safety at sea, which may be awarded to individuals, or to companies and organizations. The award ceremony usually takes place at the SAN conference and was presented for the first time in 2006.

The SAN work environment course

The SAN work environment course provides you with basic knowledge about health and safety work on board.  Information is followed by questions related to each chapter, where you can test your knowledge.  You can easily navigate between different sections of the course, and after you have finished it you can have a certificate sent to you by email.
