2019 was a relatively normal year for Swedish shipping. However, there was a slight increase in serious accidents and a drop in less serious accidents. A total of 288 events were reported, of which 77 were near accidents. Of these 77 near accidents, one was judged to be a near casualty. A further 68 events were classified as general casualties and 143 as marine accidents. A marine accident is defined as an accident that arises in connection with the operation of a ship, while a casualty is an event without such a cause. In both cases an incident is an event that could have developed into an accident if it had not been averted in time. One person was killed in marine work in 2019, when a crewmember was crushed to death during unloading work.
