A seaman was seriously injured in the summer, breaking both his heels after jumping ashore to catch a mooring rope (read SAN News no. 3 for details). The Transport Agency has issued the following account:
“Now the expect has happened. A seaman was seriously injured when a small dry-loader was mooring. A bosun was not ordered and a seaman jumped ashore to catch the mooring rope. The direct reason for the accident was the decision not to use a bosun. There must be a secure connection with land before any crewmember leaves the ship. This is clearly stipulated in the Swedish Maritime Administration regulations and general guidelines regarding safety devices and safety measures. A bosun shall always be used in order to prevent this type of accident.”
