“The regulations related to the handling of two-component paint are strict, and for good reasons: the paint is toxic and harmful to health. We have recently seen several examples of this. In a Swedish ferry company eight people on different ships have suffered from all manner of ailments, including asthma and allergies, due to exposure to thermosetting plastics such as epoxy and isocyanates. And this company is unfortunately not alone. My experience is that people are generally poorly informed about the risks of two-component paints, both onboard and at shipping company offices, and we do not realize what serious consequences this exposure may have for our health.”

“When I am giving lectures at maritime schools I usually take the opportunity to ask students how many have worked with two-component paint on placements. Everyone generally puts up their hands. When I ask how many were given specific training and a medical examination before using such paint, nobody responds. And this is wrong, of course – students should be nowhere near two-component paint. But regardless of age and position, people must have sufficient knowledge of thermosetting resins before they start to work with them, and it is the shipping company’s responsibility to ensure that crew members receive the level of training required.”
