A tugboat was assisting a ship to the quayside, but after this had been completed the towline was thrown off the ship and was sucked into the ship’s propeller. The line was momentarily tightened, which caused the brake to come loose from the capstan and parts flew around on the aft deck. The deckman was hit by parts of the capstan and/or the towline on his head, causing a serious injury and throwing him onto the deck. An ambulance was called which took him to hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries to his head, a dislocated arm, cracks in his shoulder blade and several vertebrae, injured ribs, a punctured lung and numbness in his legs.
