Professional behaviour creates good atmosphere between colleagues and increases profitability in the company. Per Arnevall from Pga Utveckling talked about this subject at the SAN conference.
Per Arnevall has worked with professional behaviour in working life for many years and has himself experienced the huge transformation that can be achieved if managers and employees change their behaviour. This spring he was working with a large ferry company and helped the managers there to solve problems in the restaurant department on one of the ships.
“It went really well,” says Per Arnevall in an interview after the conference. “Certainly, ships are a bit of a special case since personnel live and work together on board, but how we treat each other and the resulting effects are the same everywhere.”
Emotions have a life of their own
According to Per Arnevall, professional behaviour is basically about treating others as you would like to be treated. It may sound rather simple and obvious, yet it is still far from being put into practice.
“Everyone knows about this, but we all need to be reminded of it from time to time,” he says. “Agree on how you want things to be in your department, summarise it and put up reminders on notice boards and toilet doors. It is so easy to forget these things otherwise.”
How we treat each other affects both ourselves and those around us. A smile will often encourage another smile, while sour looks can create a bad atmosphere.
“Emotions have a life of their own and just a look can be enough to show what you feel. Body language is 58% of everything we communicate, and the tone of your voice is 35%. What we actually say is a mere 7%,” says Per Arnevall and continues.
“Just think of how our politicians act when they are pressed on a question. The mouth says yes, but the body says something completely different. That is something we really need to be aware of.”
