In a circular the IMO warns about falsely manufactured safety and emergency equipment. The products are cheaper than the originals, but are always poorer quality and have not undergone the standards controls required. They include hydrostatic releases, pyrotechnic man-overboard lights, smoke signals, lifebuoy lights or even water for emergency rations in life rafts. In addition, some of the equipment has invalid expiry dates or has been taken from scrapped ships, cleaned up and marked with a new date.
