In several accidents in 2012 and 2013 it was stated that VDR data could have been useful for understanding the sequence of events in such accidents. Unfortunately it has emerged that on those occasions it was probably not thought to be an obvious action to save the data which, after a certain time, would be lost. Typical events where personnel have not thought about saving data are when ships are in port areas or other manoeuvring situations.
